Brother From Another Mother

from The Perfect Thing To Do by George Huitker

/

about

Brother from Another Mother is an upbeat Beatle-esque pop song. It explores the theme (revisited in 1000 Songs) of friendship and music giving us some of the back story to George’s young creative mind and friendships formed through playing music. It is also about loneliness and how we conjure worlds in our heads, in George’s case imaginary friends, to combat that loneliness. It is about young dreams of fame and the bite of reality, of accepting our limitations and of tumbling to and seeing the greatness and joy of friendship and living authentically.

And how, in deep friendships, in brothers from other mothers, something greater than youthful dreams and compliant imaginary friends, lays: the not so enigmatic truth of circular time, of letting things be, of messiness. That in friendship and in following your heart, we learn what was always there, that dreams and youth never end, that some things are forever young.

As with 1000 Songs, George and Jesse are joined by members of the Junk Sculpture brotherhood and a host of friends in a playful cameo-rich ending. vimeo.com/bingvdg/bfamother

lyrics

When I was a kid I could not shed
Creative things that grew inside my head
My only-child intensity it smothers
The lack of any sisters or of brothers
These siblings would exist always for me
Even though they were imaginary
They never asked to leave or be set free
My point of view they always seemed to see
Seemed to see
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Woh oh oh

Singing “Two Of Us” with you one day
Reality would finally have a say
Though music had a truly mighty call
You were not really John, I was not Paul
But doing things the only truthful way
It meant it didn’t matter anyway
I could see a shifting of the lens
I let it be and knew that we’d be friends

You know
Somewhere deep inside my soul
We strum three chords and the truth
It was all planned
At times I didn’t understand
We never left our youth

As time it passed and we have both grown old
We both would rarely do as we were told
My ego always needs a massive feed
Imaginary friends always agreed
With everything I always had to say
I knew deep down this wouldn’t be OK
With people that were real and filled my cup
The time has come for me to just grow up
And just shut up
Yeah yeah yeah
Woh oh oh
George, just shut up (George, just shut up)

Now I am a kid at middle age
I fluctuate from bliss to quiet rage
But something from my childhood dreams has stayed
I think it is the friendships I have made
So maybe pride it comes before the fall
Yes maybe you are John and I am Paul
In all that we imagine there is truth
So mate you are my bro and I love you

You knew
As our friendship slowly grew
We both were born to run
It was all planned
As we channelled through the band
A love forever young

You know
Somewhere deep inside my soul
We strum three chords and the truth
It was all planned
At times I didn’t understand
We never left our youth

Brother from another mother
Brother from another mother
Brother from another mother
Brother from another mother
